Fish Oil Acne Treatment – Helping To Fight Acne Naturally

A Look At Fish Oil Acne Treatment

fish oil acne treatment imageAnother buzz around the internet is the use of fish oil for acne treatment so this article takes a closer look at this subject to find out what the fuss is about.
When people talk about fish oil they are generally referring to a natural ingredient of the oil.
In this case the healthy ingredient is a natural fatty-acid widely publicized in advertisements as Omega-3, in science these are known as N-3 fatty acids.

In laymans terms this group of compounds known collectively as essential unsaturated fatty acids, are molecules that humans have no way to create within the body and yet they are crucial for our normal metabolism, got that? no, me neither let’s move on.

Research has shown that one of the best natural sources of Omega 3 comes from fish, particularly those that are known for their excess oilyness.
Many species of fish contain Omega-3 but certain types have a lot more than others, mackerel, herrings, sardines and perhaps surprisingly salmon are top of the list followed by halibut and tuna, more exotic varieties include tilefish, shark, swordfishes. Green mussels also have high levels.
It may be of interest to note that although fish are a source of Omega-3 fatty acids for humans, fish do not synthesize it in their bodies either, they get it from algae and plankton in their own diets and so pass it up the food chain.

However before acne sufferers rush out and start eating lots of oily fish be aware that because the human race decided it was a good idea to pollute our seas with sewage and toxic waste there is a possibility for the presence in fish of heavy metals such as mercury and fat-soluble pollutants like PCBs and dioxins.

Having said that a Harvard research group reported in 2006 that ” the benefits of fish intake generally far outweigh the potential risks”
Fortunately fish are not the only source of Omega-3 as it may also be found in certain plants, the most notable of these is the flax plant, which gives us linseed oil.
Some types of nuts such as walnuts and pecans are another source as are free-range hens eggs and animal brains and some types of meat such as beef and lamb, but it should be noted that only organically fed animals will offer the most benefit.

Probably the easiest way to increase intake of Omega-3 is by taking a fish oil capsule, usually available at health food shops and drugstores or online, these capsules are generally made from a soluble gel that can be easily swallowed.

So How Does Fish Oil Help Acne?

Any subject related to how and why certain things affect the body are usually exceeding complex and well beyond the comprehension of many people (including myself) so without getting technical, fatty acids may work on acne in a couple of different ways, they can help to bring the production of androgen hormones under control, these are the type of hormones in our bodies that are responsible for controlling the production of sebaceous fluid (skin oil or sebum) from the glands on our skin.
It can also help in reducing certain bacteria that cause the inflammation of blocked pores on the skin.
Studies have also shown that Omega-3 can also lessen the risk of heart disease later in life so even if it does nothing for your acne it should still be part of your diet in one form or another.

It is not all good news though, lots of people have reported a worsening of their acne when they have started taking fish oil either as fish itself or using a supplement, so obviously if this happens you should discontinue this particular acne remedy.
Bottom line is that fish oil acne treatment is definitely worth trying to see if it has any good effects for your condition.
